Dear Peter,

Not sure if this is related, but I have been warned that pubmed will 
change all of its
requests to https by the end of september:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/news/06-10-2016-ncbi-https/

Please note that I have some problems (in another biopython-related 
project) with https requests,
which seem very sensitive to the python + urllib3 + ssl version:
https://urllib3.readthedocs.org/en/latest/security.html#insecureplatformwarning
