You are right, its only a partial duplicate of bug 2340 (the PE lines problem).
 The ** lines are a new issue.  I've reopened this bug report.

Searching for ACDB_METTH on www.expasy.org gives a normal looking entry with no
** lines,

Where did you get the attached ACDB_METTH SwissProt file from?
