[EMBOSS] Emboss-explorer broken in Ubuntu 12.10?

I just upgraded one of my boxes to 12.10 and it borked emboss-explorer
(menus no longer properly load, applications not available).  I did a clean
install of 12.10 and Emboss/Emboss-Explorer on a different machine, same
result.  Everything worked fine on 12.04 ­ any ideas?
