[EMBOSS] ENBOSS: compilation failed

Dear ENBOSS expert:

I downloaded the latest ENBOSS package. "./configuration --prefix=/mypath" went fine, but when I tried to compile it I got the following errors:
gdpng.c:24:16: gd.h: No such file or directory
gdpng.c:51: parse error before "im_out"
gdpng.c:51: warning: data definition has no type or storage class
gdpng.c: In function `fill_polygon':
gdpng.c:233: `gdPoint' undeclared (first use in this function)
gdpng.c:233: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
gdpng.c:233: for each function it appears in.)
gdpng.c:233: `points' undeclared (first use in this function)
make[2]: *** [gdpng.lo] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/f198883/test/EMBOSS-2.8.0/plplot'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/f198883/test/EMBOSS-2.8.0/plplot'
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

I noticed that there was an error when I was untar-ing the tarball:
tar: directory checksum error

Is it possible that some directories and files are not tar-ed properly?
