Can't run X apps in EMBOSS - XCreatePixmap: BadDrawable

That sounds familiar to me. I had installed EMBOSS on a mainframe and when 
trying to access it via an X-terminal emulator I had the same message. The fix 
was to put the X-terminal emulator in "pseudocolor" mode or the PC in
"256 colors" mode. Your configuration is not the same, but there is maybe also
a problem with the color maps.
