How far off is 7.4 now?  If this feature is coming soon,
then waiting is a fairly attractive option, at least compared
to putting specific workarounds in the schema.

Sorry I haven't said anything on this thread up to now.  For
what it's worth, BioJava takes the opposite approach and pre-checks
all its inserts.
