KDE has a program which called Season of KDE

how about participating a BioRuby Summer of Code this year? You don't have
to be a student to take part, as long as you feel like committing
some time to the project. It doesn't even have to be coding, it could
also be testing and writing documentation and features. 

Project leaders will be guiding.
