Actually, I meant for it to return a sequence object, which also includes
the sequence as a list of characters. I hold that a mutable data type for
the sequence is better, for reasons of easy sequence manipulations using
fundamental Python tools.  Andrew suggested that a string should be
better, for reasons of string immutability, memory efficiency, and
reduction of fundamental data types.
