Uh, oh.  That's bad.  Are you sure you have a current CVS?  Mine 
works.  I'm on:

SunOS helio 5.6 Generic_105181-25 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-Enterprise

Python 2.1 (#7, Apr 17 2001, 18:53:25)
[GCC 2.8.1] on sunos5
