Hi Joan,

In recent versions of Perl, you can open a string as if it were a file:

open(my $fh, "<", \$string) or die "couldn't open $string as a file: $!\n";

And then you'd pass the filehandle to SearchIO instead of a filename:

my $in = new Bio::SearchIO(-format => 'blast', 
                          -fh   => $fh);
