right you are- I committed

    if ( defined($fh) && !(ref($fh) && ((ref($fh) eq "GLOB") || 
$fh->isa('IO::Handle')))  ) {
 $self->throw("file handle $fh doesn't appear to be a handle");
    }

in keeping with style further up in the code at this point-
