When I ping it the name is resolved to 199.93.107.84 but I get 'request
timed out' so does that mean our DNS entry is correct but does not get
through our firewall ?

Both names should resolve to the same machine -- doesn't matter
which you use.

However, the hardware has been upgraded recently, and I think
the IP address changed.  This may not have propogated everywhere yet.  Could
you check that cvs.open-bio.org resolves from your site to:

    199.93.107.84
