Welcome to biocorba.org!

>From the BOSC BOF for Biocorba (say that 10 times fast).

[ If you don't know what some of these are, ask! We may suffer from
TMA (too many acronyms) if we are not careful. ]

+ To follow OMG LSR BSA standard or not...
  See http://www.omg.org/homepages/lsr/,and
     http://corba.ebi.ac.uk/standards.html
[ Other people feel free to send more links ]

 * Didn't want to adopt a COMPLETELY different standard but the valuetype
part of the OMG spec makes it incompatible with non-java, opensource ORBs.
Longer range plans could be a some shims to work within the BSA framework,
but causes some biocorba friction. We'll have to discuss on list and go
with consensus.
 * We'll try and name things similarly, but need to stick to the goals of
the project which are (right now):
- leveraging the bio* projects' code (ie call functions in java from
perl or python, etc).
- language/platform independent description of biological information
- EASY TO USE STANDARD for biologists, bioinformaticists

+ Build a set of off-the-shelf usuable applications in biocorba
 * set up a corba server at biocorba.org which serves up some genbank
   subset.
 * Provide clients so that new corba users can try it out and see how easy
   it is.
 * Jeff Chang and Brad Chapman will build a K-means object
in biocorba to process data - server bindings will be written in
   python.

+ Analysis objects would follow LSR spec in naming at least
  - Peter van Heusden was going to look into this and post an idl spec.

Wiki and CVS will be up shortly. I guess CVS will just comprise the IDLs
for now. We'd like to see all documentation move into wiki so others can
correct mistakes at read-time.

Other people feel free to post comments, questions, concerns about
biocorba.
