Earlier this year a new mass spectrometer
company named GV Instruments entered the laboratory
marketplace. GV began trading in
April 2003 in a new manufacturing
site located in Wythenshawe, just
outside Manchester, U.K. The company’s
logo carries the tag line:
“Reflecting 25 years of mass spectrometry,”
a surprising assertion for a
new company, but the roots of GV
go back many years. Manchester has
always been a key center for mass
spectrometry. I met with Dr. Tony
Williams, Managing Director, who
explained that GV Instruments has
its origin in the VG Isotopes business,
which was split off from the
organic mass spectrometry business
of VG Instruments in the late 1970s.

GV
Instruments (GVI) secured two IsoProbe-T™ TIMS orders from high-profile geological laboratories in China. The instruments will be used for isotope geochemistry, cosmochemistry, and geochronology. Both systems are configured with the latest in detection capability. This deal builds on the relationship between GVI personnel and renowned Chinese scientists that has been established over the past 25 years.

During the past two decades, the medical biotechnology
industry has successfully brought more than
160 drugs and vaccines to the marketplace. Additionally,
according to the Pharmaceutical Research
and Manufacturing Association (PHRMA), there
are over 371 new products currently in clinical trials
targeting more than 200 diseases. These include
AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, cancer, diabetes,
heart disease, and multiple sclerosis. A large
proportion of these drugs are protein-based therapeutics,
which are primarily injectables and are
generally more expensive than small-molecule
drugs. Indeed, a year’s supply of some of the protein
drugs could be in the range of $10,000 or more.
