Hello Burke,

as it is with nearly all questions about EMBOSS the answer is YES.
Please have a look at the administration document written by Gary Williams at:
http://www.hgmp.mrc.ac.uk/Software/EMBOSS/Usa/databases.html
There you can find some examples about SRSWWW which allows you to load sequences directly from SRS servers somwhere in the world.
The more generic URL definition works with other types of servers (NCBI) to download sequences from there.
If even this does not solve your problem (e.g. if you are behind a firewall like me, snifff) you can always use the APP definition. This is simply a call to a local script. It should accept a single paramter and return the complete sequence entry on stdout.
Hope this helps,
Hello EMBOSSers,

Is it possible to extract genbank file information from an on-line database
if I have an accession number or do I have to download the hundreds of
genbank files locally and extract it from that? If so how? I have read
information on seqret and it seems truly wonderful but it seems to work only
with local databases?

Thanks!
