No no no no please not -- if there is no object then there is no 
object -- please please please no hacks for which you need to 
program hacks which necessitate some hacks and so on. I think you do 
need to check whether there's a species or not if you want to be on 
the safe side.

Or put the whole thing within an eval block and catch and ignore the 
null-pointer exception - ah, wrong movie. OK.
